What is an inside wireman electrical apprenticeship?
An inside wireman electrical apprenticeship is a program that teaches individuals the part of the trade that deals with most commercial and industrial buildings. It’s a powerful training experience combining 10,000 hours of on-the-job training with over 1000 hours of classroom study.
Do inside wiremen always work inside?
Not likely. We are usually one of the first to arrive on a job and the last to leave. One day, you could be working inside a high rise building and the next you might find yourself running conduit outside in a ditch. Our members work on all types of electrical systems and equipment, which are located both inside and outside of buildings.
How long does the apprenticeship last?
The program is a five year program consisting of 10,000 hours of on-the-job training and over 1000 hours of classroom training.
What does the apprenticeship cost?
The apprentice is required to pay a yearly $150 tuition fee plus the cost of their books. If the apprentice works through the year with no infractions of the rules, he or she receives all of their book and tuition money back. Therefore, an apprentice can graduate through the five year program without paying a cent.
Do I get paid while working through my apprenticeship?
Apprentices are assigned to one of our signatory contractors working along side a journeyman electrician. They receive excellent wages through a structured pay schedule while they learn the trade. As they advance through the program they will receive raises in pay.
Where will I work during my apprenticeship?
You will be assigned to one of our signatory contractors and they will send you to a specific job site. Local 743’s jurisdiction covers areas in Berks, Lancaster, and Schuylkill Counties. You may end up working at some point in any of the three areas. Most jobs are in either a commercial or industrial atmosphere.
When and where will my classroom study take place?
The apprenticeship school year usually runs from September to May. Classes are normally held two nights a week for three hours each night. Your class nights may vary. Some have class Monday and Wednesday nights, while others attend class on Tuesday and Thursday nights. There are also some mandatory weekend classes. All classes are held at our training facility at 20 Morgan Drive Reading, Pa.
What do the letters JATC stand for?
JATC stands for Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee. The committee is made up of six members, three from the union side and three from the contractor side. This committee oversees all aspects of apprentice and journeyman training.
